Coronation 60 years ago
The Royal Standard is accompanied by bunting as we celebrate the 60th anniversary of HM The Queen's coronation in Westminster Abbey. Long may she reign over us. It's bright and sunny today, how different from the rain soaking London on that day in 1953, for those around at the time. Ahem, that's Sean, not me. AW

Farewell Ark Royal
The decommissioned former HMS Ark Royal leaves
Britain today for scrapping in Turkey, leaving the Royal Navy without a carrier
to deploy high performance aircraft for the first time since it invented the
“flat top” concept nearly 100 years ago. A sad day, hence the flag is at half-mast.

Battle of the Atlantic 70th anniversary
There's a memorial service in St Paul's Cathedral today to honour the merchant sailors who sacrificed their lives in the Battle of the Atlantic 70 years ago. We're marking the occasion by flying the White and Red Ensigns, for the Royal Navy and the Merchant Navy, respectively.
